How Recent Cyber Attacks on UK Retailers Could Happen to any Business

The recent high profile cyber-attacks on retailers such as Co-op, Marks & Spencer and Harrods have brought Cyber Security back to the attention of the media.

Smaller organisations may think they’re not at risk but as highlighted by recent government statistics, smaller organisations are more likely to be victims, especially those with less resources in place.

It’s important to note that these breaches weren’t complex in nature, resulting from social engineering attacks, in which the cyber criminals pretended to be from the organisation’s IT team.

How Can You Make Sure the Wrong People Don’t Gain Access?

Some quick and simple techniques you can implement today:

• Lock your screen (Windows + L) when leaving your computer

• Never share passwords, even with someone claiming to be from IT

• Verify calls or emails asking for access or credentials

Further Steps Recommended by the NCSC:

• ✔ Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

• ✔ Limit who has Administrator access and regularly check if access is legitimate

• ✔ Use monitoring to prevent unauthorised access

• ✔ Implement regular employee training and review policies
