What is the Cyber Essentials Scheme?

The Cyber Essentials scheme is a government-backed, industry-supported scheme that helps organisations, large and small, public and private, to protect themselves against common online threats and improve their defences.

The scheme addresses the most basic internet-based attacks that use widely available tools and need little skill. The scheme also demonstrates publicly the organisation's commitment to cyber security.

Benefits of the Cyber Essentials Certification

Improved Security

The Cyber Essentials scheme provides a framework for implementing basic security measures that can significantly reduce an organization's risk of cyber-attack. By implementing these measures, organisations can improve their security posture and protect their assets from a wide range of cyber threats.

Regulatory Compliance

Many industries and jurisdictions have specific regulations that require organisations to implement specific security measures. Cyber Essentials certification can help organisations meet these requirements and demonstrate compliance with regulatory standards.

Competitive Advantage

Cyber Essentials certification can be a valuable differentiator for organisations looking to stand out in a crowded market. By demonstrating a commitment to security, organisations can build trust with customers and partners, and differentiate themselves from competitors.

Business Continuity

Cyber-attacks can have a significant impact on an organization's operations, including downtime, lost revenue, and reputational damage. By implementing Cyber Essentials controls, organisations can reduce the risk of cyber-attacks and improve their ability to respond and recover in the event of an incident.

Patching and Monitoring

Without regular patching, a PC can become vulnerable to a variety of cyber threats, such as viruses, malware, and ransomware. Attackers are constantly scanning for systems with known vulnerabilities that they can exploit, so keeping software up to date is critical to staying protected.

Monitoring involves keeping track of a system's performance and security status to detect and address any issues that arise. This includes monitoring for signs of malware infections, unauthorized access attempts, and other suspicious activities.

How long does it take to get certified?

The time it takes to get Cyber Essentials certification depends on the size of your business and the level of certification you are seeking. On average, small businesses take around 2 weeks to complete their assessment. Following submission, it usually takes on average 3 days for the certification body to give you a response. However, depending on the time and size of your business, it can take up to 6 months to receive a Cyber Essentials Plus certification.
