Microsoft are enabling a stronger form of multi-factor authentication

From the 15th of September 2023, Microsoft will be prompting users that authenticate using SMS and voice methods to set up the Microsoft Authenticator app when they sign into their work or school account.

This change will take place on a rolling basis over six weeks as part of ongoing efforts to improve security. After the feature is enabled, you will be prompted to install the Microsoft Authenticator app, a stronger form of multifactor authentication than SMS and voice methods.

What is the Microsoft Authenticator App?

The Microsoft Authenticator app is a mobile application that provides an additional layer of security to your Microsoft account. It helps you sign into your accounts when you’re using two-step verification, which makes it harder for other people to break into your account. You can use the Authenticator app in multiple ways, such as two-step verification, phone sign-in, and code generation.

To set up the Microsoft Authenticator app, you can follow these steps:

1. Sign into your account and then go to your My Account portal.

2. Select Security info in the left menu or by using the link in the Security info pane.

3. On the Add a method page, select Authenticator app from the list, and then select Add.

4. On the Start by getting the app page, select Download now to download and install the Microsoft Authenticator app on your device.
