Warning: It’s ‘Hack Friday’ for cybercriminals. Here are our tips to avoid your deals becoming their steals
Many of us are counting our pennies this year so a Black Friday bargain may be somewhat enticing. As retailers prepare discounts and product deals to tempt online shoppers, cybercriminals across the globe are preparing for a surge in opportunity.
The National Cyber Security Centre Says...
"Shoppers lost over £10 million to cyber criminals during last year’s festive shopping period, with 25–34 year olds most likely to fall victim."
It more important than ever to take these steps in Cyber Security and protect yourself from the unwanted threat of cybercrime.
- Password security – create strong passwords and ensure you have 2FA password authentication in place for added security.
- Credit Card Information – Do not enter you details unless you are using a trusted site.
- Check the locked padlock icon is visible in the URL frame
- Use trusted websites - look out for https:// and security icons.
- Beware of fake websites - different domains (.net instead of .com)
- Pop-ups – be careful where you’re clicking, you’re right to be cautious of misspellings and poor-quality images
- Phishing emails - there are plenty of scams for items not ordered and fake delivery updates. Think twice before clicking a link to track your purchases.
- Beware of identity theft! Your name, address and payment are necessary for an online sale. Birthdays, NI numbers are not! Don’t overshare.
- Keep Anti-virus software on your computer installed AND always up to date!
- Stick to private Wi-Fi networks / VPN. Public hotspots may threaten your online safety
- Avoid online shopping in public – eyes over shoulders!! Beware!! Shop at home, protect yourself.
