Cyber Essentials and The Three Little Pigs

Why your SME needs Cyber Essentials - explained simply using our Wolf and Three Little Pigs analogy.

The Cyber Wolf is Huffing and Puffing: Why Your Business Needs Cyber Essentials

Every small business owner knows the tale of the Three Little Pigs. But in 2026, the Big Bad Wolf isn't lurking in the woods, he’s sitting behind a keyboard, scanning the internet for an easy target.

Cyber security can feel overwhelming for organisations, however, protecting your digital kingdom doesn't have to be a fairy tale. By using the UK government-backed Cyber Essentials scheme, you can protect your house and keep the digital wolves at bay.

Here is how your current business security stacks up against the classic fable.

House No. 1: The Straw House (No Protection)

The first little pig built his house quickly out of straw. It was cheap, required minimal effort, and he hoped it would provide enough protection against the wolf.

Many businesses operate just like this. Relying on default passwords, a bit of anti-virus and a belief (hope) that 'we’re too small to be targeted'.

The Reality: Cyber criminals don't just target FTSE 100 giants; they use automated bots to find any open door.

The Wolf’s Attack: A basic phishing email or a simple malware strain is all it takes. With a single huff and a puff, the wolf blows the straw house down, leaving your data, customer details, and finances completely exposed.

House No. 2: The Wooden House (Cyber Essentials)

The second little pig upgraded to wood. It was sturdier than straw and showed a clear effort to build something more permanent that could withstand basic wolf attacks.

This is the equivalent of achieving Cyber Essentials certification. By implementing the five core technical controls, you firmly secure your perimeter.

  1. Boundary firewalls: Setting up a digital fence to block unauthorised access.
  2. Secure configuration: Changing default passwords and removing unnecessary software.
  3. User access control: Ensuring staff only have access to the data they need for their roles.
  4. Multi Factor Authentication (MFA): User must provide two or more distinct pieces of evidence to verify their identity before gaining access.
  5. Patching & Monitoring: Keeping all devices and applications updated to fix known vulnerabilities.

The Reality: Cyber Essentials is a self-assessment option, independently verified by an assessor. It is proven to guard against up to 80% of common cyber-attacks.

The Wolf’s Attack: The wolf arrives, huffs, and puffs, but the wooden structure holds its ground against standard, opportunistic threats. Most wolves will realise it’s too much effort and move on to an easier, straw house. However, a determined wolf will eventually find a way into the wooden house, so it’s recommended to use a stronger

House No. 3: The Brick House (Cyber Essentials Plus)

The third little pig took no chances. He invested time, resources, and hard work into building a house of solid brick, almost guaranteed to keep out event the most determined wolf.

This represents Cyber Essentials Plus. It covers the exact same five technical controls as the standard certification, but with upgrades and most importantly independent verification.

So instead of just declaring that your systems are secure, a qualified external auditor simulates a cyber-attack on your business to test your defences in real-time.

  • The Reality: This is the gold standard for SME security. It provides absolute peace of mind for your management team, your board, and your clients.
  • The Wolf’s Attack: The wolf can huff, puff, and try to climb down the chimney, but the brick house is impenetrable to standard cyber threats. Your data remains safe, and your business continuity is assured.

Why SMEs Must Build with Brick and Mortar

Upgrading your digital defences isn't just about avoiding a horror story; it unlocks massive business benefits and often customers and suppliers won’t want to waste time with a business that’s made from straw!

Don't Wait for the Wolf to Knock

In the business world, a cyber breach isn't just an inconvenience, it can be fatal for an SME (and in the fairy tale world for the pig!)

Building a secure digital infrastructure is no longer a luxury, it is a fundamental requirement for growth and survival.

What’s Actually Included in a Managed IT Support Package? (And What Isn’t)

Last updated: 5 October 2026. A managed IT support package usually includes a remote helpdesk, device monitoring, security patching, anti-virus management and back-up checks. UK providers charge a fixed monthly fee for these core services. On-site visits, out-of-hours cover, project work, hardware, software licences and advanced cyber security are often excluded or charged as extras. Picture three quotes on your desk. Each one promises “unlimited support”, yet the prices sit hundreds of pounds apart. That gap usually comes from the small print, not the service. This guide shows what a typical UK package covers and what usually costs extra. Under…
