The ‘Tick-Box’ Era of Cyber Essentials is Over

A major 2026 update will transform Cyber Essentials into a far more rigorous, security‑driven standard. Are You Ready for the new rules coming in April?

The Cyber Essentials rules are being updated to ensure that the standard remains effective against modern attacks and moves away from a simple tick-box compliance approach. If your business views Cyber Essentials as just an annual form-filling exercise, the new update arriving on 28th April 2026 is about to change everything.

The new rules mean that many things that were only previously recommendations are now mandatory. So, for example, if you don’t have Multi Factor Authentication (MFA) on a cloud app, the assessor doesn’t give a warning; they issue a fail.

For SMEs, this isn’t just a minor refresh; it’s a significant tightening of the rules. The UK Government and IASME are shifting the focus from ‘intent’ to ‘evidence’.

What is Cyber Essentials?

Cyber Essentials is a UK Government backed scheme that is designed to protect organisations of all sizes against a wide range of the most common cyber threats. It focuses on five key technical controls that, when implemented correctly, can prevent the most common cyber threats, including phishing and ransomware.

It acts as a verified baseline, proving that your organisation takes data security seriously and has the fundamental protections in place. In many supply chains it is now a standard requirement.

What’s changing in Cyber Essentials?

  • Zero-Tolerance MFA: If a service can have Multi-Factor Authentication, it must have it. Missing it on even one minor cloud service means an automatic fail.
  • The 14-Day Patching Race: Critical vulnerabilities must be fixed within 14 days. No excuses, no delays.
  • Cloud is Non-Negotiable: If your data is in a SaaS or IaaS platform (like 365, Slack, or Trello), it’s now officially in scope and must be secured to CE standards.
  • No More Ambiguity: Vague network boundaries are gone. You must justify every exclusion with technical proof.
  • Risks of Certificate Revocation: Are increasing, particularly for the Cyber Essentials Plus (CE+) audited certification.
  • No More Ambiguity: Vague network boundaries are gone. You must justify every exclusion with technical proof.
  • Social Media Included: Such as Facebook, LinkedIn and X are now considered to be cloud services.

Why is Cyber Essentials changing?

The update isn’t about adding additional hurdles, it’s driven by the need to align the scheme with the way businesses operate, especially as cyber threats have become more sophisticated.

By enforcing MFA and shortening the patching windows to 14 days, the NCSC and IASME are ensuring that an organisation’s certification reflects its actual resilience rather than just its ability to follow a checklist.

In short, the scheme is evolving to ensure that a pass truly means a business is protected against today’s most common digital threats.

Why this matters for SMEs:

In the past, some SMEs and even IT providers helped businesses ‘pass’ by simply checking boxes. Under the new rules that approach will lead to failed assessments, revoked certifications, and most importantly exposed data.

What do you need to do?

  • Assess your currently process, especially around the major changes in MFA and patching.
  • Use our cyber security tool to see if you currently have the tools and processes in place to pass the new Cyber Essentials rules.
  • Don’t let your certification lapse or your security fail because of outdated processes
  • If you have previously filled it in yourself as a tick box exercise or used a provider which did, seek guidance now.

What’s Actually Included in a Managed IT Support Package? (And What Isn’t)

Last updated: 5 October 2026. A managed IT support package usually includes a remote helpdesk, device monitoring, security patching, anti-virus management and back-up checks. UK providers charge a fixed monthly fee for these core services. On-site visits, out-of-hours cover, project work, hardware, software licences and advanced cyber security are often excluded or charged as extras. Picture three quotes on your desk. Each one promises “unlimited support”, yet the prices sit hundreds of pounds apart. That gap usually comes from the small print, not the service. This guide shows what a typical UK package covers and what usually costs extra. Under…
